WHO said tennis girls in shorts aren’t sexy? Oh, we did.
How wrong we were ... Sun yesterday
Hours after The Sun told how Maria Sharapova’s new outfit had been branded too manly by tennis fans, the Wimbledon babe gave her tuxedo-style gear its first public airing.
And she proved it DID have its advantage points.
The 21-year-old hitched up one side and flashed a glimpse of thigh, winning wolf-whistles from the crowd.
Now we can only apologise — we based our views on publicity shots from sportswear makers Nike.
World No2 Maria — who has previously thrilled fans with her tiny skirts — wore the controversial outfit as she beat France’s Stephanie Foretz 6-1, 6-4.
Classy
She said after the game: “It’s the tuxedo look, very inspired by menswear.
“This year and every time at Wimbledon I want to do something classy.
“I’ve loved fashion since I was very young.
“I’ve never worn shorts at Wimbledon before — and this was the time to do it.”
She added, worryingly: “I love things that are actually a bit baggier and wide. I’m tall and I can pull off those.
Maria teamed her shorts with a jacket-style tracksuit top as she arrived on Court One. She then peeled down to a waistcoat-type top.
Nike caused shockwaves on Monday when it released advance photos of the outfit.
It was set off with a pair of £2,500 Tiffany earrings which she kept on yesterday.
A spokesman insisted: “We think fans and players will love Maria’s new look.”
But accountant Robert Foals, 33, of Deal, Kent, voiced millions of male fans’ fears when he said: “I’d much rather see her in a skirt.”
He added: “That said, she’d probably look great if she wore a bin bag.”
